After an extremely challenged childhood in the streets of LA. I moved to Colorado as a teenager troubled and uncertain of my path. Many run-ins with the law and countless arrests left me wondering what or if this life had anything for me. I had been set up for failure and was playing that particular hand extremely well. Stereotypical latin screw up probably going to end up in prison for the rest of his life.
There was however one thing, one thing healthy and positive in my life (besides the son I had at the age of 17). That was the gym and really any form of grueling exercise to drown out the noise. I boxed as a teenager but was nowhere near ready to benefit from it. I found strength training later as a young adult and was hooked. I’d always had a fire inside me that I never understood and the gym was a safe place to let it out, even if only for an hour. Picking up the iron became my first real passion in life.
Mixed Martial Arts made its way into my life in 2004. Here was another outlet, another chance to quiet the noise for me. I quickly fell in love with MMA, and excelled fairly quickly. I was invited in 2009 to train with the best team in the world at Grudge Training Center. Alongside the likes of GSP, Nate Marquardt, Duane Ludwig, Rashad Evans, Donald “cowboy” Cerrone and a gym full of the top fighters in the world, I learned what it took to be the best. I bled, I sweat, and I cried daily, desperate to make something of myself. I never did make it to the top of the top in our sport. I had to retire in 2013 due to age and one too many concussions but the years I spent on the mat and in the cage shaped who I am to this day.
In the midst of my MMA journey I was fortunate enough to run into Loren Landow and Eric Telly of Landow Performance, two of the top Strength and Conditioning coaches in the world. They would be my strength coaches and help me train for performance and show me what it looked like to prepare efficiently and intelligently. I’d only known a small piece of what weight training could accomplish. Loren and Eric opened my eyes to a whole new world of performance. I dove in, I watched and learned and studied constantly. I knew my time was coming up in the fight game and I needed the next step. I engulfed myself in the science of the body and the mind and I couldn’t get enough. I began to train clients of my own both on the mats and on the gym floor and I’d found yet another outlet for the fire burning inside. Coaching was the end goal for me and it was written all over every wall I could see.
Retirement hit me like a ton of bricks in late 2013. I had a seizure in the cage of my last fight and on top of that needed double knee surgery immediately. My wife stepped up to the plate and handled my client load and nursed me back to health. She also had been in fitness most her life and was looking for a way back in, so here we were. Shortly after, the gym I was training out of abruptly shut its doors with little to no warning. Gyms back then could be full of a lot of shady characters. So for the most part I kept to myself and tried to get my clients everything they were looking for and more. There was however one other coach in this particular gym that seemed to want the same things for himself and his clients that I did. Todd Zalinski showed up, he had ethics and morals when it came to his life and business and I saw it. We shared the same outlook on a lot of things, faith, business, character and a desire to be the best so we pulled the trigger. Todd, my wife Jennifer, and I pooled all of our resources and made the biggest, scariest move of all of our lives. We Opened Vital Strength and Fitness in May of 2014 and we haven’t looked back.
Currently we are the top facility in the city and one of the most sought out facilities in the state. I am a head MMA coach for one of the best teams in the world, and personally work with the top athletes in the game. Curtis Blaydes, Alistair Overeem, Neil Magny, Austin Hubbard to name a few. Hundreds of men wanting to excel physically, emotionally, and spiritually put their trust in me and my team to carefully help them reach their goals. My blend of the mental fortitude it takes to push past comfort and the knowledge of how to do that safely and effectively has changed the lives of many people. That is our mission to assist our community see their true capabilities and build the mental toughness through physical fitness required to succeed in this world.
I grew up in a small town in northeast Wisconsin. I started training in Taekwondo when I was 5yr old, I continued this training until I was 13 and discovered weight training. I would like to say that growing up in a small town in the Midwest was easy, but it was not. I was always the smallest most average kid in my class, usually getting picked last in gym class and not able to excel at many sports. The discipline I learned in Taekwondo I applied to weight training and found out that it could not only transform my body but also my mind. I found that even an average person with discipline and hard work can overcome obstacles that they otherwise could not with talent alone. By the time I was a senior in High School I was captain of the football team, an all-conference linebacker and was moving on to play Football in College. While playing football and attending classes at Concordia University Wisconsin, I majored in Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology, and Exercise Leadership. My goal was to help other people not only learn how to transform themselves physically but also mentally.
I started in the fitness industry immediately after college and in 2003 moved to Colorado. In 2010 I started my own personal training business. In 2013 I met Vinnie Lopez. I realized we had many of the same goals and ideas when it came to fitness and helping people realize their true potential. In 2014 and opportunity came up to open a gym, so we linked arms and went all in.
Today VITAL is the one of the top training facilities in the city and one of the most sought out facilities in the state. Our mission to assist our community see their true capabilities and build the mental toughness through physical fitness required to succeed in this world.
